Best Creation May Blog Hop

At Best Creation, we are celebrating summertime on this month's blog hop. You start at Liz Chidester's blog and end at the Best Creation blog (where you'll find a list of all the stops in case you lose your way). The design team and our guest designer Shannon Morgan will be sharing some great ideas. There are chances to win some of our New June releases if you leave a comment on the Best Creation blog and Facebook or sign up as a Best Creation follower.

On 29 May, I will also pick two commenters on my blog to receive one pack each :
18 pcs of I love America @ 9 pcs of Basball paper
My project is inspired by my niece who got a pair of mismatched sneakers for her tenth birthday. She loves them and wears them whenever she can. She also has to explain to grandpa that she hadn't made a mistake - that they are meant not to match.

Cardboard size 5 flip-flops
Now I'm sending you off to Karen Thind's blog for more summer inspiration. If you are interested in a step-by-step tutorial, come back when you are done with the hop. And I'd love to see your version if you make a pair.

Tutorial :

1. Using your left flip-flop as a guide, cut 3 sole pieces and 2 heel pieces from heavy cardboard. Mark the hole for the thong on the sole pieces

2. Embellish the top sole piece with deocrative papers

3. Thread 2 lengths of ribbons through the hole of all 3 sole pieces

4. Place a heel piece between 2 sole pieces and glue together

5. Repeat for the next layer, gluing the ribbon ends between the 2 sole pieces

6. Conceal the bottom ribbon ends with decorative paper

7. Repeat for the right shoe

BCC #10 - Techniques

Can't believe that we are coming to the end of May and it's Blog Candy Conversation #10. Today let's talk about techniques.
  • are you interested in learning new techniques
  • which is form of learning is easiest for you - video, photo, written
  • what's the latest technique you've picked up

Leave me a comment and on 29 May I'll pick one name to receive this giveaway : K&Co Madeline - 9pcs of 12x12 paper

Paraphrasing one of the BCC commenters : My name is Sandy Ang and I am a technique junkie. The latest thing I've learnt is coptic binding to create handmade books with pages that open flat.

I picked this technique up by following this video from Jim Escalante and I promise it is easier than you think. (The next thing I need to learn is how to create a video tutorial so you have a recommendation send it my way). The only tip I have is to add is to use a curved needle if you have one as it makes the sewing really easy.

BCC #9 - Inspiring Designers

For the penultimate Blog Candy Conversation #9, let's talk about Designers who Inspire.
  • Who is on your blog roll ?
  • Are there any designers who always amaze you ?
  • Do you admire the creativity or techniques of certain crafters ?

Share your favourite designers with me and I'll pick one commenter on May 29 to receive this giveaway

K&Co Que Sera Sera - 9 pcs of 12"x12" papers

This tiny (for me) card measuring 3.75"x2" was created for Christine Middlecamp's Pretty Lil' Things project. I first heard of Christine through her Embellished Doilies Tutorials. And was just blown away by her incredible layered style and detailed photo instructions. If you haven't seen them, head over here and be amazed.

The card is a sort of tribute to Christine's work on the smaller canvas. But everything is much more random as I wanted the tiny elements to tumble over each other in a sort of falling dance. Thank you Christine for being a designer who inspires me (and countless others) and for allowing me to be a small part of your wonderful project.

BCC #8 - Photography

Welcome to Blog Candy Conversation #8. I'd love to hear your thoughts on Photography.
  • what or who are your favourite subjects ?
  • is there anything you find particularly difficult to shoot ?
  • do you have any special tips to share ?
Let me a comment and I'll pick one name on May 29 to receive this giveaway : K&Co Brenda Walton - 9pcs of 12x12 paper

Here are two of my all time favourite photos. I started by making some artist trading cards. Enjoying the freedom to chose unrelated ephemera to give the ATCs an enigmatic feel.

Then modge podged the ATCs onto plain old drinking glasses. And dressed up the glasses with a ribbon bow with pre-printed pennants from Elle's Studio. They were quick and easy to make and the smell from the lemon balm was lovely. Three of these mini-bouquet graced the May Day lunch table and each guest took one home afterwards.

I used a point-and-shoot camera on auto setting. My tip is to shoot in overcast daylight when nothing casts any shadows. And credit must also go to the reflective properties of the glassware for how well the pictures turned out. The only 'clever' thing I did was to snap them slightly askew and off-center. Compositionally , both utilise the three-quarters rule between the foreground (the cutting board) and the background (the wall).

BCC #7 - Publication

Hi, it's Blog Candy Conversation #7. I'm thrilled by your wonderful response to the series. With blogger playing truant, I'm about half-way through catching up with your comments. And so far I've seen lots that were useful, funny and thought-provoking. Hope you'll keep them coming. Today let's talk about Publication.
  • Do you submit for publication ?
  • Any preference for e-zines or print magazines ?
  • Does it bother you to have to physically mail out your designs
Share your thoughts and I'll draw one commenter's name on May 29 to receive this giveaway :K&Co Mira - 9 pcs of 12"x12" papers
I'm always submitting my Best Creation projects for publication. As they release three collections a month, I chose e-zines as submission-to-publication timeline are much shorter than print magazines. Plus I don't have to worry about shipping stuff across several continents.

Cupcake was for Marina

I'm a big fan of Scrapbook New and Review as they don't require manufacturers to remove the projects from their blog during the blackout period. And from a designer's perspective, I love Scrapbooking.com as they include a designer's profile and blog link.

This Cupcake card nestled inside a it's tri-fold envelop was picked up by Scrapstreet for their April Issue. The Let's Party collection has such fun little cupcakes, I couldn't resist making a whole collection of them. Now I'm all set for birthday cards.

BCC #5 - Supplies

Wow, we're half way through the Blog Candy Conversation series at #5. Let's talk Supplies today.

  • Which would be your favourite catagory of scrappy supplies ?
  • Do certain items tend to pile up and not get used ?
  • What do you find yourself buying most often ?
Leave a comment on supplies and I'll draw one name on 29 May to receive :

K&Co Maison - 9 pcs of 12"x12" paper

Paper is my absolute favourite supply item. It offers the opportunity to create an endless variety of three dimensional designs. Which is probably the reason I always check out the paper range of any new release. And why I have an ever growing stash of it.

This mailholder tutorial for Hobby Sew. The majority of what I get in the mail are bills, notices and payment requests - not fun stuff. So I cheer myself up by putting them in this vintage style holder.

Tutorial :

  • Cut out this template for the base, using 0.25" for the glue tabs

  • Cut out the bottom flap and two side pieces. The insert is optional

  • Glue the insert over the base and fold the glue tabs inwards

  • Glue the bottom flap over the two side pieces and add some lace around the V

  • Glue the flap and sides onto the base. Add a wire around the top.

Butterfly Garden supplies : Flower Blooms, Dew Drops and Nature's Sanctuary papers, ephemera pack, clear pops. Other supplies : Basic Grey basics paper, ribbon, pearl brad, metal wire

BCC #4 - Sports

Hi, It's Blog Candy Conversation #4. Today I'm going to ask about Sports.

  • Do you have a favourite ?
  • How about indulging in spectator sports ?
  • Is there a popular sport that you just don't get excited about ?
Let me know what you think and I'll draw one name on May 29 to receive this giveaway.

K&Co Nepolitan - 9 pcs of 12"x12" paper

Baseball is Best Creation's latest release. Not knowing anything about baseball, I figure I'd use the more generic papers to make projects that are not sports related. Well that plan definitely didn't pan out.

This card went out to Cebelica
My first card fairly shouts Baseball, what with 15 fussy cut balls littered on the bottom. The medallion was created by joining together two different chipboard shapes. I got the champagne glitter paper with the Graduation collection but found it worked really well as spotlight beams on this card.

This card went out to Patty J
The inspiration for this card is my kickboxing trainers. Not sure if it turned out sufficiently sneaker-like. But it was fun playing with the green tones in this line. A (very sporting) colour which I don't use very often. And came up with two suitably guy-style cards that are a change from my normal stuff.

BCC #3 - Challenges

It's Blog Candy Convesation #3. I thought Challenges would be a fun topic for today.
  • Are you motivated to create for challenges ?
  • Which types of challenges do you enter ?
  • What are some of your favourite challenges ?

Tell me anything you like about the topic. I'll pick one commenter on 29 May to receive this giveaway :

K&Co Colette - 9 pcs of 12"x12" paper

I first started blogging because I wanted to play in card challenges. My favourites were theme or recipe challenges. And because I didn't think I was the lucky sort, never tried random winner challenges. Oh and it took three months on a sketch design team to convince me that I don't process sketches well.

I still like to play. And was over the moon when my Bunny and Oranges altered tin was chosen as one of the three winners in Two Peas' Sassafras challenge. They were so fabulously generous - sending over the complete CHA Winter 2011 releases. So expect to see this blog peppered with lots of Sassafras projects.

BCC #6 - Style

Welcome to Blog Candy Conversation #6. Let's talk Style

  • Do you have a signature cardmaking or scrapping style ?
  • Or are you comfortable with a variety of styles ?
  • Is there one you find most difficult to pull off ?
Leave me a comment and I'll draw a name on May 29 to receive this giveaway : K&Co Que Sera Sera - 9 pcs of 12"x12" papers

I think the most consistent theme in my design is the interplay of shapes and lines. It cuts across almost all my projects - cards, paper construction, altered objects. It's something I gravitate towards naturally without even consciously thinking about it.

Breathe is a private commision for Gloria

Most of my work have a very controlled look to it. So this year I'm trying out looser, messier, more organic designs. This card is a first effort at what I call my bits and pieces style. The lines are still there but the bottom half is looking much more random than my usual stuff.

I have no idea who the little Sassafras girl is. But she looks adorable lending a focusing glance to my card. And her pale mauve colour is a nice, soft contrast to the rest of the reds, yellows and oranges.

BCC #2 - Recycle

Hi ! It's Blog Candy Conversation #2. Today's topic is Recycling.

  • Do you use any recycled materials in your crafting ?
  • Does it bother you if something is not archival ?
  • What's the most unexpected thing you've incorporated in your project ?

Leave me a comment on the topic and I'll draw a name on 29 May to receive this giveaway :

K&Co's Brookfield - 9 pcs 12"12" paper

My recycle effort is this card for
Hobby Sew. On the right is the Butterfly Garden Clear Pops packaging which has a long frame on pretty pattern paper. On the left, you can see what I turned it into.

To cover up the product information, I used this soft fairy image. And created a visual story about her sneaking eggs out of a birdnest. Everything is then collaged onto a wooden birdcage and butterflies.

The top of the card looked a little bare so I tied on a single-sided bow. Added a red stamp for some pop and clipped on a metal butterfly. The original charm was too dark so I painted it over with white acrylic, wiped down when half-dry for the distressed look.

This went out to Nicole

When I first got the collection, I thought this signature fairy was a tad too twee for me. But now that the card is done, I like her sly, thieving look.
